The big talk in SA Rugby today was the unveiling of the new Bok coach, Heyneke Meyer. But that was about as much of a mystery as Barry Ronge’s sexual preference, the real kicker was in fact that the Kings will play Super Rugby next year.
Now I’m a bit confused by all of this and find it very cheeky of SARU to just blurt it out there with absolutely no plans for how this is going to happen. Naturally for the Southern Kings or the Kings, or Cheeky Watson’s son’s XV (whatever they want to call themselves) to play, one of the established top flight unions has to sit out. Can I get a bullshit ! The Mighty Elephants aren’t even in the bloody Currie Cup and haven’t even been able to win the second division in the past two years!
To put this bollocks into perspective, Eastern Province playing in Super Rugby is like:
- Earl Rose captaining the Boks
- Ursula Stapelfeldt opening a Victoria Secret show
- Paul Harris going into Wisden’s top 10 spinners of all time list
- Stephen Donald getting picked ahead of Dan Carter
or me shirtless on the cover of Mens Health magazine!
Let’s just forget about this for now though…

Holy crap. Are they EP? Was wondering who them kings were. Maybe they’ll get some cash somewhere and get some good players. Oh no! *bb can’t watch face* Just occurred to me that p divvys available. Happy days.
I have to agree with you.
Its absolutely ridiculous for one of the top flight unions have to sit out because of them.
However, to take some positives out of it, won’t it be more feasible if the Cheetahs and Lions merge to become the Cats again, considering their tribulations in SupeRugby?
Instead of having two poor performing teams, we will now have the Stormers, Bulls, Sharks and Cats competing for the title and one below average team.
Maybe then this diabolical move would make some sense.
Glad you mentioned Earl the Pearl. I see he’s going to be playing for the ele’s this year. Oh well at least there is no relegation from 2nd division (or is there?) Surely a team meeds to demonstrate it can be COMPETATIVE in a COMPETITION?
A few things to consider… Yes, EP can’t even get into the Currie Cup, so they’ll probably take out an interest free loan from government to buy some new players… They’ll probably get in some top talent, like Andy Goode, and that Samoan guy who butchered the Sharks semi-final a few years ago, and maybe Jaco van der Westhuisen… Maybe Garth Wright and crazy Adri Geldenhuys will come out of retirement… Whatever they do they will finish last, in fact, the only good thing that will come out of the Southern Spear Chuckers playing Super 15, is that their young fullback, SP Marais, will get noticed by bought by a proper rugby team…
The surplus from the Lions or the Cheetahs (or Cats) will migrate down to PE and join the Spears. It’s pointless as we will still see the same players.
If they keep their existing players who can’t make it to the Currie Cup, we might as well give the other 4 teams 10 points each and call them warm up games.
