Pocock outraged as whistle effectively blown on Bryce Lawrence’s career.
SANZAR’s head of referees Lyndon Bray has blown full time on Bryce Lawrence’s international career. New Zealand’s ‘referee of the year’ in 2011 has fallen out of favour with just about everyone since he cocked up the World Cup quarter-final between Australia and South Africa, and has seen very little high profile game time since then. Bray said that he was not given any Tests earlier in the year by SANZAR and now faces a difficult challenge in getting back onto the elite panel. That is of course PC speech for ‘piss off you’re out’.
Rugby scribes and fans on social media have widely welcomed the announcement with #FuckBryce trending in just about every country that knows what rugby is. But one high profile individual has rushed to the side of the embattled ref voicing his outrage on the subject. That individual is none other than David Pocock.
Speaking from Mitchell Johnson’s apartment balcony in Perth, Pocock expressed his frustration in no uncertain terms.
“This decision is completely lacking in logic and speaks volumes on how SANZAR is happy to just toss away experience to satisfy the needs of the fickle public. How someone can go from being referee of the year in New Zealand and then suddenly not be involved in international fixtures is beyond me and indeed casts a dark shadow over the sport as a whole!” said a visibly distressed Pocock.
Many are of the opinion that the tough as nails open side Wallaby flanker benefited hugely from Lawrence’s blind eye/s in the controversial Australia vs South Africa World Cup quarter final, but Pocock refused to bring this up when questioned by the 2 or 3 onlookers who were out walking their dogs early Wednesday afternoon.
“Bryce will always have his critics, when you reach the top of your game it is par for the course, but I always found him to be a terrific ref who let the game flow and helped produce games that all Australians could be proud of. Personally I just don’t know where to from here. International rugby is a hard enough place as it is and now that Bryce is gone my play will no doubt be scrutinized more than ever with petty rules like hands in the ruck, releasing the tackler and entering through the gate no doubt coming to the fore like never before.”
Pocock then returned to the confides of Johnson’s apartment where loud sobbing and soft Katy Perry music was heard. He has declined the opportunity to release an official statement to the press, but has suggested that when the time is right he will do so.
Personally I’m happy Bryce is gone, but I think it is unfair to just single him out as a shit ref. Have you seen this plonker in action?
