Irene’s Weekly BounceBits – September 3rd.

It’s Monday. That alone is enough reason to feel fragile, but I have to get something off my chest. And no, I’m not posing for Playboy. I want to share how I feel about the poor sportsmanship shown by the crowd at Newlands on Saturday.

Booing occurs everywhere but certainly not to the extent that it does there – not even close.

As young kids, we are always told by our parents to be humble winners and gracious losers and always upholding ourselves by giving our best and respecting the opposition. Why is it then those grownups give their kids such valuable advice, yet run off to their favourite sport and boo the opposition? That’s not pride for your side, or passionately supporting your team, it’s bad sportsmanship. It demeans the game.

I think it’s time that Newlands stop putting the “BOO” in Booking your ticket.

Right, rant over. Onto the review then :)

Pretty much based around the Currie Cup action, so here goes.

First off the Griquas stunned the Lions (and 99% of all Superbru players) to completely outplay them and win 42-32. Now, could it be that the Lions had the same syndrome that the Boks had last weekend (over confidence)?

The Sharks did the great escape again by beating the Cheetahs 34-32 after being behind for most of the game. I’m sure the Cheetahs will feel gutted to have lost this one. Looks like the Sharks have finally shaken off the Cheetahs hoodoo.

Then Western Province surprised everyone (including themselves) by scoring 5 tries against the Bulls zip and beat them 42-6 in a completely one-sided affair at Newlands. In my personal opinion, this was probably the worst performance by the Bulls in a Currie cup match the last few years.

Best of the weekend:

Team: Griquas for doing the unthinkable
Sportsman:  The entire SA Paralympics team
Hunk:  Hmm, Oscar Pistorius is quite a handsome bugger! ;)
Douche: Boolands crowd*

The booing at Newlands and indeed other places still sours live sporting matches in SA. Click here to read more about this.
