Irene’s Weekly BounceBits – September 25th.
Written by Irene Nell
Not a great deal of sport over this past long weekend, but I’m sure you all made up for that with some fun filled braais and get-togethers with mates. That’s what I did and got to enjoy, something that made the Shark’s loss on Saturday a little easier to deal with…
The Currie Cup
The Griquas showed us again that they struggle to win away from home and the two soft intercept tries did not help their cause against a fired up WP on Newlands where the hosts beat them easily by 45 -21.
The Bulls held on to their Currie Cup hopes (just), beating the Cheetahs 34-30 in an entertaining match on Loftus.
Well done to the Lions who came back against the Sharks beating them 28-22 after being behind 16-6 at half time. In light of the Kings/SupeRugby fiasco, how awkward would it be if the Lions go on to win the Currie Cup again ?
T20 World Cup
The Proteas came out on tops against hosts Sri Lanka in their first major challenge in the T20 World cup. Okay, the rain shortened it to a 7 overs hack fest, but this is still a great result for the Proteas as they play for some elusive ICC glory that has always seemed to escape them in the past. In other results the Aussies beat the Windies, Pakistan beat New Zealand and India beat England.
Perhaps not such a big deal right now, but this tournament will hot up real soon in the elimination stages.
A tribute to Corrie Sanders
From sporting results to sporting disasters, it is with huge sadness that this weekend we received the news of local boxing legend Corrie Sanders losing his life in a senseless armed robbery. Corrie was attending a family gathering at a restaurant near his home when gunmen opened fire on them. Corrie was reported to have been shielding his daughter and took a bullet in the process. So sad to see such a senseless act of violence take the life of someone who meant so much to so many sports people here in South Africa. He will be sorely missed.
That’s all for this week, catch you back next Monday with some great Springbok news hopefully
